How the Constitutional Court is Supposed to be Protected
In Fall 2024, the German Bundestag and Bundesrat adopted a constitutional reform that is supposed to protect the Constitutional Court from attacks by populists. As I had written my PhD about this topic, I was keen to write about the reform and its implications. While many people know the Constitutional Court and it is mostly seen as an important and neutral entity by citizens in Germany, only few know how it works and why it is so vulnerable. Most journalistic articles about the reform were difficult to understand and included only long texts. We wanted to make this important and difficult topic easier to understand for all readers. Since any article on the reform had to be quite long due to the complexity, we also aimed to keep the readers engaged throughout the story with the visuals.
In this project, I took care of the research, wrote the texts and did some first sketches. Matzke Gernot implemented the sketches into a beautiful design and added tons of good ideas! Since the judicial implications were rather complicated, a colleague with a judicial background added some details to the texts and did some thorough fact checking.
