What divides the Union parties and the SPD

After the German federal elections, CDU und SPD announced that they would negotiate about a possible coalition. We analyzed where the parties positions are close, and in which areas their positions conflicted.

We decided to use a radar chart for this visualization. Though there might have been more straight forward visualizations, we hoped to engage the users through the novel and extraordinary nature of this visualization type. Since this visualization type is rather complex, we build it throughout a scroller. Starting with only one policy area, we then add areas step by step and thus guiding the reader how to read this chart. Later on, we use similar charts for more detailed policy areas.

For this analysis, I was in touch with the researchers from the Open Expert Dataset, coded the data analysis and created the visuals. The positions were calculated in R and then tranformed into visuals through the datawrapper API. Rina Wilkin put the finishing touches on the visuals and Nadine Wolter wrote the text.
